You were my very first friend on Substack. The first person to make me feel like I’d found my people.

When I read this newsletter and couldn’t respond right away, I marked it with a star so I would be sure to make time to respond.

Your words are important. I enjoy reading them. I’m super glad you exist, whether or not you’re writing.

But I have to say, I really really like your writing.

Thank you so much for doing that. It makes me so happy to know that you like my writing. It makes me feel like maybe there is an audience out there for me?

Hi Amy, writing “occasional” stuff on here is weird, isn’t it? It’s kind of a combination of intimate and impersonal … like social media, but not really. There’s a guy I know who posts every single day, always a picture, sometimes a very short comment. I like it perfectly well.

Interact with people who are physically distant has always been kind of weird, I think. Substack tries to act like social media to keep engagement up, but most people come here because they're sick of social media. So, that's a little awkward.

How have you been dealing with it, lately? I know you haven't been posting as often.

Yeah, mostly what you noticed: I only write (and post) when I feel like I have something that’s worth sharing and that I’ve brought to a decent level of polish. I like Substack best when it’s a place for good writing, so I try to bring that, and that’s what I look to read as well. I get a little irritated by self-indulgent, half-baked stuff … stuff that feels like it should be posted on social media!

Yeah, the problem is, what is good writing? It's so subjective. I get what you mean though about half-baked stuff, where it seems like the person hasn't put in much effort. At the same time, I've read other newsletters where it seems like the author has put in a ton of effort, but I still didn't like their writing.
